When I listen to countertenors, I have to lament the absence of the coltellino [the "little knife", which Baroque audiences often applauded - "Eviva il coltellino" they enthused after convincing castrato performances], but I do it only for audiorevenge and purely artistic purposes: Pope Clement IX's warped edict against women studying music means little to me. But Bartoli, ah, unmutilated and endowed with a magnificent resonance chamber, now that gives me a Haendel on everything...
Handel is certainly among my favorite composers as well. Here in the States he is best known for "Messiah" and the "Water Music" and "Royal Fireworks Music," which are the works which have most endeared him to me. One also hears some of the organ concerti from time to time on the radio. I also very much like "Alexander's Feast" in a recording with Alfred Deller and Maurice Bevan, inter aliis. The operas are little known.
