Nearly 29 years ago, I was at a Good Friday service at the cathedral in Boston in which the St. John Passion was chanted. The archbishop chanted the words of Jesus; a deacon chanted the evangelist; and a third person chanted the other voices. It is my understanding that the chant melodies were traditional. I'm not sure if Schütz employs the same chants for his Passion. What is clearly different is that he creates something new for the crowds. We get a hint of what Bach would do, but I think they're satisfying in their own right.

I like Schütz's music.

Ich mag Schütz sehr, die "Musikalischen Exequien" etwa kann ich vielleicht nicht gerade auswendig, aber es kommt dem schon sehr nahe. Seine Polyphonie ist so überwältigend genau und dabei zugleich eindringlich und besteht in der Tat für sich, zu schweigen davon, wie seine Vertonungen die deutsche Sprache ausdeuten.
Die hiesige Kantorei (sie nennt sich aus Traditionsgründen "Singakademie") war so tapfer, seine Johannes-Passion am Karfreitag hier aufzuführen. Ich war davon absolut angetan, gerade auch weil ich weiß, wie schwierig es ist. Darum das Musikbeispiel.
Ursprünglich wollte ich noch etwas Erbauliches dazu schreiben, aber meine Feder ist derzeit etwas "eingetrocknet".
