with an attempt to "translate"

One more time about Benedict XVI and something more

One can hardly find a human abyss that is not implemented in the history of the papacy (also highlights to be fair). As a Lutheran, and German, it’s apparently easy to say this. But it has improved over the past 200 years (approximately) a lot, the institution. This may sound condescending, but is by no means meant so; it only shows the distance from which the following has been developed.

At first sight the personal should stand back here, but well, let us be a bit inappropriate as others do (a cheap excuse, I know). I have considered this question long and thoroughly and really wanted nothing to say about it anymore, especially at this place. But my American friend and blogger "Naturgesetz” had insisted hard I had to keep my promise. I had only responded to him in German, and will do it again now "translated" and slightly more detailed here. This might not be my final opinion, but at this moment it is:

It began with his predecessor, John Paul II, very different. I do not know why, but he just had to start speaking and one was hit in the heart of a powerful spirituality that wasn’t expected anymore. This created a kind of band, which continued to increase over the time.

In addition: The basic feeling of my younger years (in East Germany) was to live in a false world (well, this is normal in adolescence, but this was different here), a world of lies and deception. It's not easy to stick with the idea one is in right mind, it’s just the world around that is falling apart. John Paul II called the lie by its name, and had enough courage to stand up to this world, not without success.

His successor was different. He became familiar to me through his books or some of his speeches (in Regensburg, in the Reichstag). The feeling grew, here one sees very clearly the danger of modern man, and what can lead us beyond it. Unlike its predecessor, but just as clearly, only quieter, more inward, and spiritual; he did not confirm the existing, he showed its limits. Everything was straightforward and comprehensible. Because the damaged image of man that prevails in our time, is shared in the core of being "progressive" or "conservative" today alike, it is only used for different  purposes.

He created an emotional secureness: Here someone saw the church exactly in the situation in which it has to assert itself, and the world as it is, a ship without a compass drifting through the sea of time. I saw him as a "solid rock", felt even growing nearness to the Catholic Church, why? Even though I (sometimes) saw different answers, it was clear that the question of truth in matters of faith was taken very seriously. Protestantism has long ago given up any dogmatic seriousness wantonly and is thus on the way to sink into a kind of cultural entertaining wellness program.

The “world” didn’t like the face in the mirror and the one holding it, and was creative with the throwing of smoking grenades in it defensive efforts. The Roman Church was at this "dislike" probably not well prepared. I can remember clearly the situation in which the news of the election of Cardinal Ratzinger to the see of St. Peter put me in a state of disbelieving enthusiasm. I was simply happy. Is it so surprising that I almost felt betrayed hearing about the resignation of Benedict XVI? A friend called me just stunned.

Is the office of being Pope like any other one? Then his resignation was reasonable and understandable. Is it so? Isn’t the Catholic Church, as I understand, until now believing the idea, that this office is rather a bridge between heaven and earth? The “Vicar of Christ”, whom he represents? Is the "represented", whose image I am called and asked to represent, not leading to very different thoughts and even decisions?

"However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."

The world is getting tossed usually since its beginning. But I see an argument I can accept. If you are suspicious of your own mental abilities and have to fear their decline could cause serious damage to the body of Christ. Yes, I might accept this decision in such a light. The human body, less, but only if one is Pope. There are wonderful examples in Church's history about the Holy Spirit emerging resplendently in a disappearing body.

Benedict XVI could have become such a "spiritual" Pope. It would have been so necessary, and still is. For the practical, organizational, the reform of the apparatus, etc., etc. other solutions could have be found, I'm sure, a more effective Cardinal Secretary of State e.g. About the practical difficulties that must bring a "shadow-Pope" with them, we prefer to stay silent.

The idea of a “Vicar of Christ” sounds like pure arrogance, rightly. Unless it’s executed only in pure trust into the Holy Spirit, overcoming the human nature, and treated so.

Herr "Naturgesetz" hat es überlebt...

poorly translated

Mr. "Natural Law" has survived to meet me, at least I hope so sincerely. Right now he is sleeping safe and well on his night train to Paris then. I can hardly remember when I felt so terrible the last time (something clearly above 30 °C, usually I hide under the ground at that temperature since I really can’t bear this, so it was kind of a test for us all, I fear Mr. “Naturgesetz” came out best, I almost fell into the exhibits of the exhibition, while he asked me still serious issues and even carried my bag, at times). If you can see missed opportunities so sharp, not that nice actually. He is an institution for good reasons in certain parts of the blogosphere and someone who takes a lot of interest the last few years in my poor writings; we share many views about the world, its history and our Lord in heaven etc.

But we should follow some of the pictures, the first is from a gate of this town, the other from the entrance to the “Berliner Dom”, the (Protestant) main church of Berlin, in my eyes it looks a bit as a failed attempt to be a an opera house at first, well. The photos of the inside are not good really, but they give an impression, the 2 pictures before show the front and the rear side.

No photos of the Hohenzollern crypt, perhaps piety (or bad lighting conditions), we stood at the coffins of the “Great Elector”, King Frederick I, etc.

Then we moved to my beloved Potsdam, not that it was any cooler there, but we wanted to see an exhibition at the “New Palace” dedicated to Frederick the Great, one could say a lot about it, but I'm probably biased because I felt certainly ungracious due to the unfavorable conditions for human life at that moment. I have to think again about it (a not so nice variant would be that I smelt the odor of quackery, because obviously someone really does not like things, who he was set as their guardian for, well you could recognise an idea here and there, but besides the bad lighting and air conditioning the exhibits appeared mostly somehow "parked" and especially the effort was evident not to show them in a light of "false glory"), but as I said, it was way too warm.

Oh Mr. Roloff attempts to explain in the next to last image (well known for his sermons here) Mr. “Naturgesetz” the meaning of “New Palace” and its creator. I only remember my remark that there was a time when things were created in order, first, of course, to heighten one's own existence, but indirectly and perhaps not actually unintentionally the same for others...
