Macht was daraus, aus eurem Erbe.

6 Other Civil War Songs of the South

So much magnificent music for such an evil cause (there may be some irony hidden). I have long been captivated by the Civil War music of the South. So, that previous post was anything but a slip-up.

I am actually deeply immersed in the history of Mecklenburg right now, but I simply had to get this out—because I’m listening to it at this very moment, again and again, as so often. I’m still trying to figure out what fascinates me so much about it, but whatever.

I’m simply going to present 6 more magnificent, overwhelming songs from the South—the South that lost at the end.

It is likely about the history that befalls you—you can make something of it, or simply go under, numb and defeated. On the musical front, at least, the South won by a landslide: in the fight against the "mercenary hordes."

A heartfelt, friendly word:

Make something of it—of your heritage. This comes without a shred of condescension. Your music has simply crept deep into my soul, and it found no danger there. And I can say that my soul is well-versed in these matters; otherwise, I would have been dead long ago. So, if it gives its stamp of approval, you can be sure it knows what it’s talking about.

1 Johnny Fill up the Bowl

der Text des ersten Liedes

When Johnny comes marching home again,

    Hurrah, hurrah!

We'll give him a hearty welcome then,

    Hurrah, hurrah!

The men will cheer, the boys will shout,

The ladies, they will all turn out,

    And we'll all feel gay,

When Johnny comes marching home.

The old church bell will peal with joy,

    Hurrah, hurrah!

To welcome home our darling boy,

    Hurrah, hurrah!

The village lads and lassies say,

With roses, they will strew the way,

    And we'll all feel gay,

When Johnny comes marching home.

Get ready for the jubilee,

    Hurrah, hurrah!

We'll give the hero three times three,

    Hurrah, hurrah!

The laurel wreath is ready now,

To place upon his loyal brow,

    And we'll all feel gay,

When Johnny comes marching home.

Let love and friendship on that day,

    Hurrah, hurrah!

Their choicest treasures then display,

    Hurrah, hurrah!

And let each one perform some part,

To fill with joy the warrior's heart,

    And we'll all feel gay,

When Johnny comes marching home.

CHORUS: If you want to have a good time, jine the cavalry!

Jine the cavalry! Jine the cavalry!

If you want to catch the Devil, if you want to have fun,

If you want to smell Hell, jine the cavalry!

We’re the boys who went around McClellian,

Went around McClellian, went around McClellian!

We’re the boys who went around McClellian,

Bully boys, hey! Bully boys, ho!

CHORUS: If you want to have a good time, jine the cavalry!

Jine the cavalry! Jine the cavalry!

If you want to catch the Devil, if you want to have fun,

If you want to smell Hell, jine the cavalry!

We’re the boys who crossed the Potomicum,

Crossed the Potomicum, crossed the Potomicum!

We’re the boys who crossed the Potomicum,

Bully boys, hey! Bully boys, ho!

CHORUS:

If you want to have a good time, jine the cavalry!

Jine the cavalry! Jine the cavalry!

If you want to catch the Devil, if you want to have fun,

If you want to smell Hell, jine the cavalry!

Then we went into Pennsylvania,

Into Pennsylvania, into Pennsylvania!

Then we went into Pennsylvania,

Bully boys, hey! Bully boys, ho!

CHORUS:

If you want to have a good time, jine the cavalry!

Jine the cavalry! Jine the cavalry!

If you want to catch the Devil, if you want to have fun,

If you want to smell Hell, jine the cavalry!

The big fat Dutch gals hand around the breadium,

Hand around the breadium, hand around the breadium!

The big fat Dutch gals hand around the breadium,

Bully boys, hey! Bully boys, ho!

CHORUS:

If you want to have a good time, jine the cavalry!

Jine the cavalry! Jine the cavalry!

If you want to catch the Devil, if you want to have fun,

If you want to smell Hell, jine the cavalry!

Ol’ Joe Hooker, won’t you come out of The Wilderness?

Come out of The Wilderness, come out of The Wilderness?

Ol’ Joe Hooker, won’t you come out of The Wilderness?

Bully boys, hey! Bully boys, ho!

CHORUS:

If you want to have a good time, jine the cavalry!

Jine the cavalry! Jine the cavalry!

If you want to catch the Devil, if you want to have fun,

If you want to smell Hell, jine the cavalry!

Nachtrag

The Bonnie Blue Flag

We are a band of brothers, and native to the soil,

Fighting for our liberty with treasure, blood, and toil;

And when our rights were threatened, and the cry rose near and far,

Hurrah! for the Bonnie Blue Flag, that bears a single star!

Chorus

Hurrah! Hurrah!

For Southern rights, hurrah!

Hurrah! for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star!

As long as the Union was faithful to her trust

Like friends and like brethren, kind we were and just

But now, when Northern treachery attempts our rights to mar

We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Chorus

First gallant South Carolina nobly made the stand,

Then came Alabama, who took her by the hand;

Next quickly, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida,

All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Chorus

Ye men of valor gather round the banner of the Right

Texas and fair Louisiana join us in the fight

and Davis serve, our loved President, and Stephens, statesman rare

Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Chorus

Now here's to brave Virginia, the Old Dominion State,

With the young Confederacy at length has linked her fate,

Impelled by her example, now other states prepare

To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Chorus

Then cheer, boys, cheer, raise a joyous shout

For Arkansas and North Carolina now have both gone out,

And let another rousing cheer for Tennessee be given,

The single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag has grown to be eleven.

Chorus

Then here's to our Confederacy, strong we are and brave,

Like patriots of old we'll fight, our heritage to save;

And rather than submit to shame, to die we would prefer,

So cheer for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Chorus
