I watched the excerpt from the St. Matthew Passion, and thought the tenor looked like Peter Schreier, although older than in other pictures and videos I've seen. Youtube confirmed it. I'm not familiar with the other soloists and conductor, but they all did their parts well, I thought.

Interesting that the Japanese find Bach's music so congenial. A number of years ago I read an article that said that Bach was an introduction to Christianity for many Japanese. But even so the culture still seems largely impervious to the gospel.

Well Schreier was born 1935, so he is not that young and yes, I liked it too. When I saw I should write something about Bach I’ve looked at some interpretations and it’s always surprising, how different this can be, but to be honest, Schreier’s voice was sometimes too metallic for my taste.
Bach, “The 5. Evangelist”, I have to confess, there is nobody else who brings faith so near to my heart than him. And about the Japanese, I’m pretty sure the whole Korea and half of Japan will become Christian over the next 100 years, it’s just an idea and maybe I’m wrong.

If I cheer you up I’m happy. Maybe you should read my previous post, it’s a bit sentimental, if you like sentimental stories, I’m not sure. Good recovery.

This brought back memories when I was still singing classically. I've sung the tenor arias in this wonderful work many times. I've sung Bach's other Passion (St.John's}, both arias and Evangelist parts not as many times as the St. Matthew Passion which is of a grander scale. This specific aria is one of the most difficult of the Bach arias I have ever sung. I was always relieved when it was over. ;-)

The musician who played the viola di gamba did an exquisite job in this video as well.

We performed the St. Matthew Passion in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit Michigan, USA. This would be back in the 1970s. At the time, I recall a four second delay of sound which gave the music the right amount reverberation. The Roman Catholic cathedral ( Blessed Sacrament ) had close to nine seconds. One had to sing differently in that building or it would turn to mush.

It was a pleasure and a surprise to hear this again. The tempo was perfect as well as the singer. Thanks.

When I was a young men I sung in a philharmonic choir, so I have a certain idea why it is hard to sing, but it’s of course most intense and impressive. I’m glad my little search for some good pieces of Bach wasn’t completely useless. But seems I should make my silly translations more regularly. Thanks for your visit, I really appreciate it.

Arrgh, of course I was one young man, not like in the old joke: “Who I am, and if so, how many”.
