Die Kirche gedenkt heute der Kreuzigung ihres Herrn. Und wie könnte dieses Gedenken eine angemessenere Form finden als erneut mit einem Passus aus Bachs Matthäuspassion. Mir ist heute eher zufällig aufgegangen, daß Johannes Paul II. genau am heutigen Tage starb, am 2. April 2005, ich kann schwer erklären, warum ich nach wie vor eine enge Verbindung zu diesem Papst fühle und will aus seiner Botschaft anläßlich des Kreuzweges am Kolosseum, Karfreitag, 25. März 2005, also unmittelbar vor seinem Tod zitieren:
„‘Adoramus te, Christe, et benedicimus tibi, quia per sanctam crucem tuam redemisti mundum‘ [Wir beten dich an, Herr Jesus Christus und preisen dich, denn durch dein heiliges Kreuz hast du die Welt erlöst.]. Ja, wir verehren und preisen das Mysterium des Kreuzes des Gottessohnes, weil aus jenem Tod eine neue Hoffnung für die Menschheit entsprungen ist.
Die Verehrung des Kreuzes weist uns auf eine Aufgabe hin, der wir uns nicht entziehen dürfen: Es ist der Auftrag, den der hl. Paulus mit den Worten zum Ausdruck brachte: 'Für den Leib Christi, die Kirche, ergänze ich in meinem irdischen Leben das, was an den Leiden Christi noch fehlt' (Kol 1,24). Auch ich opfere meine Leiden auf, damit sich der Plan Gottes erfülle und sein Wort zu den Völkern gehe. Ich bin all jenen nahe, die in diesem Moment von Leiden geprüft sind. Ich bete für einen jeden von ihnen.
An diesem Tag des Gedenkens an den gekreuzigten Christus blicke ich mit Euch auf das Kreuz und verehre es mit den Worten der Liturgie: 'O crux, ave spes unica!' Sei gegrüßt, o Kreuz, einzige Hoffnung, schenke uns Geduld und Mut und erhalte der Welt den Frieden!“

The Church commemorates today the crucifixion of their Lord. And how could this commemoration find a more appropriate form than once again with a piece from Bach's St. Matthew Passion. To be honest I found out by chance that John Paul II died just on this day, on April 2th 2005, I can’t explain, why I still feel a close connection to this pope and I want to quote from his message on the occasion of the Via Crucis at the Colosseum, Good Friday, March 25th 2005, immediately before his death:
"Adoramus te, Christe, et benedicimus tibi, quia per sanctam crucem tuam redemisti mundum". Yes, we adore and bless the mystery of the Cross of the Son of God, because it was from his death that new hope for humanity was born.
The adoration of the Cross directs us to a commitment that we cannot shirk: the mission that St Paul expressed in these words: ‘[I]n my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the Church’ (Col 1: 24). I also offer my sufferings so that God's plan may be completed and his Word spread among the peoples. I, in turn, am close to all who are tried by suffering at this time. I pray for each one of them.
On this memorable day of Christ's crucifixion, I look at the Cross with you in adoration, repeating the words of the liturgy: ‘O crux, ave spes unica!’. Hail, O Cross, our only hope, give us patience and courage and obtain peace for the world!”
Thanks for this post and yesterday's. The St. Matthew Passion of Bach is such a sublime expression of faith and love, and the words of John Paul II so near the end of his life are a beautiful meditation on the meaning of all suffering as a way of sharing in Christ's redemptive work.
